Welcome!

THE CONCEPT

To promote Florida's commercial beers and brewers.
To provide a focal point for advertising Florida's craft-brewed beers.
To encourage the brewing of outstanding beer.
To feature the winners' craft-brewed beer at the Brewer's Ball in March.

Eligibility

This competition is open to all commercial beers brewed in the State of Florida and offered for sale in the State of Florida without significant changes or modifications to the beer recipe from the way is has been offered for sale to the public.

New for 2013: Small Batch

Beers brewed in small quantities or as special projects or that aren't otherwise available for the wider exposure to the market provided by the Large Batch classification should be entered with the Small Batch classification. This might include beers brewed in small quantities, or that have had special treatments done to a small portion of a larger batch, or that are released infrequently and thus will have difficulty meeting the 1/2 barrel requirement for gold medal winners.

Judging

Medal Round judging will take place the weekend of February 2nd, 2013. Small and Large batch beers will be judged together for the first round, then separated for Best of Show judging. All winners except Best of Show will be announced at the Florida Brewers Guild Festival in Tampa on Saturday, March 2nd, 2013. Each beer will be judged by a panel of two or three people, pooled from professional brewers and from the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) consisting of judges ranked “certified” or higher. Emphasis will be on how good is the craft-brewed beer, not how well it fits the style guideline.

Gold Medal winners will notified in advance of the FBG Fest awards ceremony.

Prizes & Awards

Credit for each beer will go to both the brewery and to the brewer of that particular beer.
Entries will be graded on a score sheet modified to promote scores in the range of 60 to 100 points.
Entries scoring 90 - 100 will receive a gold medal.
Entries scoring 80 - 89 will receive a silver medal.
Entries scoring 70 - 79 will receive a bronze medal.
The first place winner from each category as well as all of the gold medal winners will be judged at the Best of Show.
Best of Show winner for the Large Batch classification will be awarded the title Best Florida Beer. Best of Show winner for the new Small Batch classification will be awarded the title Best Small Batch Florida Beer. Each will receive a Best of Show trophy that will be presented at the Brewers’ Ball in Tampa on March 3th, 2013.
Trophies will also be presented to the 2nd and 3rd Best of Show in each classification.
All Gold medal winning brewers are required to showcase those beers at the Brewer's Ball.
Please make sure to save your best beer for Sunday, March 3rd.

Categories

All beers will be judged according to the style specified by the brewer on the entry form, although little emphasis will be devoted to strict style adherence on the BFBC evaluation sheets. World Beer Cup 2012 Style Guidelines will be used, providing a much broader range of categories. Style descriptions can be seen at http://www.worldbeercup.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/2012.WBC_Style_Descriptions.pdf.
If the brewer wishes to enter a new style of beer not previously categorized he must write the description of this beer in sufficient detail for the judges. Some historical or specialty beers may fit into such a category.

Cost

$35 per entry
Entry fee must be received before judging.
Gold Medal Winners are required to send a keg of their gold medal winning beers to the Brewers’ Ball on March 3rd. Large Batch entries send a half barrel, Small Batch entries send a sixth barrel.

Deadline

January 30th, 2013

Entry Requirements

Two samples of beer will be required, each at least 12 ounces.
Each entry is required to have its State of Florida Brand number or the Date of First Tapping (if served at a Brewpub) and months that it is available for enjoyment by Florida consumers if it is a seasonal. Beers will be served to the judges "blind" so the type of container of the entry will not be an issue. Cans, bottles, kegs, PET bottles with carbonators will all be accepted. Contact the organizer if you would like the free use of Carbonator (tm) caps for your draught beer These simple to use caps allow the brewer to package draught beer and then pressurize the bottle with CO2 to prevent oxidation and retain full carbonation.

Entries should be sent to:
BFBC
c/o Southern Brewing & Winemaking
4500 N. Nebraska Ave
Tampa, FL 33603
before the January 30th deadline.

Best of Show round (Gold Medal Winner) assumes the entry of one standard size keg (1/2 bbl) for Large Batch entries or a 1/6 bbl for Small Batch entries, which will be served at the Brewers’ Ball in March. Failure to honor this commitment will disqualify the entry from the BOS awards (meaning ineligible for winning the title of “Best Beer In Florida 2013”).
